We will help your organization expand your client base and retain customers by helping your staff connect with neurodiverse children and their families.
The statistics regarding neurodiverse children being treated unkindly or turned away from after-school programs and camps highlight a significant issue: many of these programs lack the training, communication, and inclusive practices necessary to accommodate children with diverse needs.
Many programs struggle to support neurodiverse kids. They often lack the resources, like specialized staff training and appropriate tools, needed for true inclusion. For example, a 2019 study showed autistic children are significantly more likely to be excluded. This highlights a problem of limited access.
Exclusion creates social isolation. When kids are denied access, they miss out on making friends and developing crucial social skills.
These children also miss out on important developmental opportunities. Exclusion can prevent them from participating in activities that build teamwork, communication, and problem-solving skills.
There’s a serious gap in training and resources. Staff often haven’t received adequate neurodiversity training, and programs may lack things like sensory-friendly equipment. This really points to a systemic failure to prioritize inclusion.
This exclusion reflects a larger problem of recreational inequity. It highlights a broader societal neglect of inclusivity, not just in recreation, but also in education and other vital areas.
